Class: Defend Yourself: Medlegal Topics in EMS
| Description: Most of us groan when we hear about medical legal issues and practices. But we also know how crucial it is to our own livelihood to make sure we do what’s right or what’s best for the patient. Trouble is, most of us don’t know what the best approaches are to practicing clinically excellent medicine in a legally defensible manner.
That’s why this workshop is a “must attend” for prehospital care personnel. We will cover topics that will help you be more aware and have a better understanding of what to do, and not do, in your daily practice. We will demonstrate how documentation can save or hang you; explain the anatomy of a lawsuit and how to minimize your liability; and highlight principles to follow when making critical decisions about a patient's care or transport. Discussion and case studies will provide participants the opportunity to get answers to their questions. The highlight of the workshop will be a mock trial where real judges and attorneys will demonstrate how lawsuits are fought, won or lost in the courtroom. We are pleased that nationally recognized and respected EMS attorney W. Anne Maggiore will be the lead presenter for this workshop. She is an attorney and former paramedic, firefighter and EMS administrator in Albuquerque, NM. Her legal practice involves the defense of EMS personnel, physicians, nurses and law enforcement officers against lawsuits. She also represents EMS personnel in licensing issues. Ms. Maggiore has published numerous articles and has been a contributor to textbooks and other scholarly work. She holds a clinical faculty appointment at the University of New Mexico, School of Medicine EMS Academy where she instructs paramedics, residents and physicians in medical legal issues. Due to generous sponsorship by American Medical Response, tuition to the workshop is set at $20 per person. Lunch is included! |
