Class: Lecture: Crush Injuries

Crush Injury, Crush Syndrome, Compartment Syndrome and Harness Hang Syndrome. From the urban and residential environment to the remote and wilderness setting, these medical problems will challenge even the most experienced medical provider. A discussion about what they are, what they are not, as well as the latest in treatment options and theories. Citing incidents from freeway collapses to mountain climbing accidents to elderly fall patients, we will explore the progression of signs and symptoms, as well as complications for the untreated or mismanaged patient.

Bruce Hagen, EMT-P began his carer as and EMT in ALCO since 1981, and became a Paramedic in Alameda County in 1983 after graduating from Stanford. He was the medical group supervisor during the Cypress Freeway collapse from October 17-23, 1989. He is currently a Paramedic Field Supervisor for AMR in Alameda County. He is also a founding member, instructor and medical team leader for FEMA CATF-4, with multiple deployments including Northridge, NYC World Trade Center, Nor Cal Floods, as well as strike team leader for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. He has been rescue team leader in Hurricane Wilma and in the Karakoram Mountains of Pakistan in 2005. He currently serves as the Director of Education and Training for Global Medical Rescue Services, the Rescue Chief of the Belize Disaster and Rescue Response Team, and the Director of the Belize Institute for Tropical and Wilderness Medicine.
