Class: Lecture: Disaster Response to Haiti
| Description: Presented by Dave Lipin, Commander, DMAT CA-6
Presentation of the U.S. government's health and medical disaster response program, and ts recent and ongoing response to the earthquake in Haiti. Discuss local and State disaster medical olunteer opportunities as well as personal preparedness for disaster work in extreme or austere environments. Biography: David Lipin is the Commander of the San Francisco Bay Area Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT CA-6), a disaster medical unit within the US Dept of Health and Human Services, and currently serves on the National Disaster Medical System’s Management Working Group. He is also the President of the California Disaster Medical Services Association (CDMSA), a non-profit dedicated to serving the disaster medical needs of California. He has responded to disasters such as the Oakland Hills Fire, Rodney King Riots, World Trade Center, Anthrax Attacks, Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Wilma, Gustav, and Ike, Haiti Earthquake, and S. CA firestorms. His background also includes mass spectator medical care, where he has managed or coordinated medical services delivery to large public events such as the Rose Bowl, Rose Parade and World Cup Soccer. Mr. Lipin has a medical background as an EMT, OR and ER Technician. He also serves as a consultant in the area of mass medical care planning, specializing in mass prophylaxis and dispensing, pandemic influenza care, all-hazard preparedness, and organizing medical volunteers. Mr. Lipin has a BS in Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, and has co-founded a Silicon Valley-based security technology company. |
